A'ea'e means 'hair prematurely graying' and the manini fish has light and dark stripes. A maoli variety bananaplant. Spectacular variegated leaves of multishades of green and white colors and they even produce variegated fruit. Fruit is tasty ripe or cooked. Primarily a dessert banana. This banana is limited in supply and somewhat expensive. It has not yet been propagated successfully using tissue culture so if you see a tissue culture for sale, it is not an a'ea'e. Also, if you see it written as "ae ae", the seller does not know enough about the plant to be selling it. The fruit peel is also variegated and has a ROUNDED end. Often people are sold a Florida variegated and told it's an a'ea'a, only to see a pointed tip when the plant fruits, confirming that it was instead a Florida.
Harder variety to grow. Fruits in about 18 months. As with most variegated plants, bright but indirect light is best.
